Family Law Practice

family law practice
Can you practice an area of Law if you didn’t choose that area as an elective in Law school?

For example, at my Law school topics such as family law and medical law are electives. Say I start out as a lawyer and decide I want to move into one of these fields without having studied that area in Law school, would it be possible? Or would I have to attain further study?

Thanks for the help.

You certainly can. Nothing wrong with law school electives but the best way to learn about actually practicing in a certain field is to intern or work under someone that actually works in the field, whether you’ve taken a corresponding elective or not. The classroom experience pales in comparison.

Drawing on their extensive experience, the authors offer a detailed and authoritative exposition of family law illustrated by materials carefully selected from a wide range of sources. Readers are encouraged to consider how and why the law has developed as it has, what policies it is seeking to pursue, whether it achieves the right balance between the rights and interests of individual family members and the wider public interest, and how it operates in practice. The text is supported by a substantial Online Resource Centre, which features regular updates on the law, supplementary materials, further reading suggestions, and study aids. The ORC also features two chapters, Introduction to Family Law, and Fundamental principles in the law relating to children.
