the effect of divorce on children
What are the most common effects of Divorce on children?

I personally hate divorce, but I’ am not married nor in a relationship, I just want to know.

Usually the child blames themself for the break-up. They are also in shock when mom and dad aren’t living in the same house anymore. Everything that the child is used to is suddenly taken away. I’m not for divorce either, but some people marry for the worst reasons An unhappy marriage is not only bad for the adults involved, but the children suffer in that situation too because they’re a lot smarter than we think and can really sense when something isn’t quite right. Children are stuck in the middle when marriages go bad.

The Good Divorce

The Good Divorce

$9.59

It’s never too late to have a good divorce Based on two decades of groundbreaking research The Good Divorce presents the surprising finding that in more than fifty percent of divorces couples end their marriages yet preserve their families. Dr. Ahrons shows couples how they can move beyond the confusing even terrifying early stages of breakup and learn to deal with the transition from a nuclear to a "binuclear" family–one that spans two households and continues to meet the needs of children. The Good Divorce makes an important contribution to the ongoing "family values" debate by dispelling the myth that divorce inevitability leaves emotionally troubles children in its wake. It is a powerful tonic for the millions of divorcing and long-divorces parents who are tired of hearing only the damage reports. It will make us change the way we think about divorce and the way we divorce reconfirming our commitment to children and families.

The Divorce Culture

The Divorce Culture

$4.99

When historian and social critic Barbara Dafoe Whitehead first cast her eye on divorce – in an Atlantic Monthly article entitled “Dan Quayle Was Right” – she provoked a firestorm of media debate. Now she has deepened and broadened her view of an American institution in a book of watershed importance. Divorce, says Whitehead, is now so deeply entrenched in America that it has engendered a “divorce culture”. From divorce as a last resort to divorce as a means of self-expression and personal growth, Whitehead chronicles a sea change in the American way of breaking up. She traces the connections between broken marriages and impoverished and neglected children. Although it is far from an indictment of divorce per se, The Divorce Culture compels us to recognize its profound moral and social consequences – and it does so with an intelligence and conviction that are wholly persuasive and often deeply affecting.

Children Of Divorce The: The Loss Of Family As The Loss Of Being

Children Of Divorce The: The Loss Of Family As The Loss Of Being

$11.89

A recognized authority on youth ministry explores from a theological and spiritual standpoint the baffling sense of loss of self experienced by children of divorce. Why does divorce cause so much strain and long-term distress for children of all ages? Andrew Root a recognized authority on youth ministry and a child of divorce himself explains that divorce causes children to question their core identity. Since a child is the product of the union of a mother and father when that union ends he or she experiences a baffling sense of loss of self–a loss of his or her very sense of being. Root redirects efforts for assisting children of divorce to first address this fundamental experience. This unique book examines the impact of divorce not only from a theological and spiritual perspective but also from a young person’s perspective. It will benefit those who have experienced divorce and those who minister to children of divorce.

Why do American parents feel they no longer control the raising of their children? To what degree does parental influence compete with television, day-care centers, schools, and peer groups? Their provocative findings and their recommendations for a national family policy have become the subject of wide debate. Divided Houses

Divided Houses

$47.48

No American needs to be told that the Civil War brought the United States to a critical juncture in its history. The war changed forever the face of the nation, the nature of American politics, the status of African-Americans, and the daily lives of millions of people. Yet few of usunderstand how the war transformed gender roles and attitudes toward sexuality among American citizens. Divided Houses is the first book to address this sorely neglected topic, showing how the themes of gender, class, race, and sexuality interacted to forge the beginnings of a new society. In this unique volume, historians Catherine Clinton and Nina Silber bring together a wide spectrum of critical viewpoints–all written by eminent scholars–to show how gender became a prism through which the political tensions of antebellum America were filtered and focused. For example, Divided Houses demonstrates that the abolitionist movement was strongly allied with nineteenth-century feminism, and shows how the ensuing debates over sectionalism and, eventually, secession, were often couched in terms of gender. Northerners and Southerners alike frequently ridiculed each otheras effeminate : slaveowners were characterized by Yankees as idle and useless aristocrats, enfeebled by their peculiar institution ; northerners were belittled as money-grubbers who lacked the masculine courage of their southern counterparts. Through the course of the book, many fascinating subjects are explored, such as the new manly responsibilities both black and white men had thrust upon them as soldiers; the effect of the war on Southern women’s daily actions on the homefront; the essential part Northern women playedasnurses and spies; the war’s impact on marriage and divorce; women’s roles in the guerilla fighting; even the wartime dialogue on interracial sex. There is also a rare look at how gender affected the experience of freedom for African-American children, a discussion of how Harriet Bee

Joint Custody and Shared Parenting: Second Edition

Joint Custody and Shared Parenting: Second Edition

$35.09

Twenty years ago, joint custody was considered a questionable parenting arrangement when a marriage dissolved. Now, with shared responsibility by both parents having become a widely accepted alternative, the debate has shifted toward examining what circumstances make it workable and the extent to which responsibility should be shared. The first edition of JOINT CUSTODY AND SHARED PARENTING, published in 1984, set the agenda for law reform and research on the effects of joint custody. The initial volume reported on preliminary data from the small research samples then available and surveyed existing law. Benefiting from the studies that have been conducted since then and from new legal developments, this second edition–completely revised and updated to encompass the wealth of new research, literature, and law–represents the collective knowledge of child developmental experts, therapists, mediators, researchers, economists, and lawyers. Part I provides an overview of the history of child custody and considerations for and against. Part II, focussing on the factors that influence the choice of joint custody, discusses when it is most likely to succeed, obstacles that can impede its acceptance, and how a workable parenting plan can be structured. Also examined are related concerns such as female dependency, inequality, and economic considerations. Part III reports the results of research on the effects of joint custody for both children and their parents. Chapters examine findings on co-parenting two years after divorce, compare joint custody with maternal and paternal sole custody arrangements, and discuss the effects of custody arrangements on preschool children, child supportpayments, and ongoing post-divorce conflict. In Part IV, chapters explore trends in the law, judicial preference for one type of child arrangement over another, and the effect of joint custody on Aid For Dependent Children eligibility. Also included is discussion of California’s joi

Marriage, Divorce, and Children in Ancient Rome

Marriage, Divorce, and Children in Ancient Rome

$78.1

The family has played a central role in most societies, and the complexity and variety of that role demonstrates there is no single definition or pattern of the family in any society. Recent studies of ancient Rome have shown that the sentimental ideal of a core nuclear family was strong throughout the period, but that reality often diverged from the ideal. This study examines many aspects of the composition and inner workings of the Roman family, and provides an illuminating case study of the sentimental ideal versus everyday reality. In addition, Rawson considers the effect of divorce, high mortality rates, status, and fostering on the family in ancient Rome.

 Stepfamilies

Stepfamilies

$15.99

Based on a landmark longitudinal study, the nation’s leading expert on stepfamilies reveals his breakthrough findings and offers the first detailed guide to easing the conflicts of stepfamily life and healing the scars of divorce. There are more than twenty million stepfamilies in America. For most of them, the simple, daily issues that challenge every family are even more anxiety-provoking. After conducting a comprehensive nine-year-long study funded by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. James H. Bray has written an invaluable book that explains why over half of all stepfamilies fail and reveals the strategies that help the others succeed. A stepfamily is assaulted on all sides by difficult and often divisive questions. How much control should a stepparent have over a stepchild? How much authority should a nonresidential parent exert over a child? How should a difficult former spouse be handled? How does an ours baby change the emotional dynamic in a stepfamily? Why is there a lack of honeymoon effect during the first years of stepfamily life? The purpose of Stepfamilies is to answer all the important questions of stepfamily life–to fill in the knowledge gaps that undermine so many stepfamilies today and, crucially, to learn the effect of stepfamily life on children. Based on one of the largest and longest studies of stepfamily life ever conducted, Stepfamilies interweaves the stories of real families to illustrate such study findings as how: a stepfamily has its own natural life cycle a stepfamily takes several years to develop into a family unit a stepfamily is at greatest risk during the first two years a stepfamily ultimately coalesces intoone of three forms a stepfamily must solve four basic tasks in order to succeed a stepfamily can help heal the scars of divorce Filled with emotional, gripping stories, Bray’s findings pinpoint the three major transitions in stepfamily life and identify the riskiest issues t
